Waldringfield Open Race Report.

Ian Videlo - 10th October 2012

Fifteen Larks including four visiting boats came to participate in the GJW Direct Lark Belle Isle Series open meeting held over the weekend of 29th & 30th September.
Conditions were good with a moderate to fresh wind and some sunshine on both days, giving rise to some excellent races.

The race officer, Gordon Harris set some compact 'P' shaped courses on the Saturday, and more variety on the Sunday when the wind direction made this possible. The first race saw Steve Hall & Simon Haighton take an early lead despite being briefly overtaken when trying to carry the spinnaker on a tight reach. However mid-way through the race Stephen Videlo & Maddie Harris were first to react to the changing tide and took the lead to finish first from Steve & Simon.

Race 2 saw some drama with a couple of capsizes as the fleet was bunched up down the first reach. Geoff Sinton lost his rudder when he was unable to avoid sailing straight across the capsized mast of Harry Pynn and Gemma Gook, but with some skilled repair work was back afloat the next day. Steve & Simon kept clear of trouble to win convincingly. The final race on Saturday was lead for a long time by Tim Vick & Rebecca Marks although they were eventually hunted down by Chris Fish & Hamish Stone and Matt Stearn & Kerry Ryan.

Sunday dawned with less wind than forecast, but by the time the racing got underway the anticipated wind had arrived. Steve Dunn & Ali Dart took the lead by the end of the first lap and extended this through the race to win from Steve & Simon followed by Alan Krailing and Edd McArdle who had joined the fleet for the day.
The second race saw Alan & Edd in control to win from the ever consistent Steve & Simon.

The final race was set over a longer 'round the island' course, and Harry Pynn, now crewed by Andrew James lead for the first lap until overhauled first by Stephen & Maddie although in the end Steve & Simon sailed a cracking third beat to find themselves in an unassailable lead to become comfortable and worthy winners of the event. Behind them Steve Dunn and Ali Dart just did enough to take second overall.
