Frensham Pond Open Meeting Report

Steve Cumley - 10th April 2006

A strong fleet of Larks were drawn to Frensham Pond SC for the training and annual open meeting on 9th/10th March. The Gill sponsored open meeting was decided with 4 races on the Sunday, in what can only be described as classic Frensham conditions.

The first 2 races were sailed back to back in a force 2 to 3. Each race featured at least 3 different leaders, however it was Chris Ellis & Katherine Young, Nick & Joanna Marlow and Steve Cumley & Eluned Jones that came in for lunch happiest of all, with a 3 way tie on 4 points.

Race 3 was held in virtually drifting conditions. Cumley & Jones and the Marlows managed to break clear on the first beat and importantly get round the first mark before the fleet sucked the rest of the wind away. These positions were held to the finish with Tony & Anna Hotchkiss breaking away from the fleet to claim 3rd.

As the race team set up for race 4 the horizon filled with dark clouds and the breeze started to kick in. Chris & Anne Biglin took up the early running, but as the lead boats bore off onto the reach a 25 knott squall hit the lake. Dougal Scott & David Marlow 2 sailed the reach and took the lead from Cumley & Jones. Scott and Cumley were able to extend their lead over the fleet, and it looked almost certain to finish in this order, until Cumley & Jones split gybes on the last run and pinched the win. Steve Chatten & Laura Mitchell sailed a superb race to get 3rd and the Marlows did enough to keep Ellis & Young behind them in the overall standings.

The competitors thanked Gill for donating the prize vouchers, and Frensham Pond SC for organising a very professional event in truly challenging conditions.
