Sunday 13 March was the final Sunday of the Lark Winter Series at Northampton SC. Going into the final race Steve Cumley and Eluned Jones led by 1 point from Simon Cox and Anna Hotchkiss and 3 points from David and Nick Marlow. Unfortunately a Hockey injury ruled out David Marlow from the final days sailing so the scene was set for a match race between Cumley/Jones and Cox Hotchkiss to decide the overall winner.
With discards in hand Cumley/Jones briefly attacked Cox /Hotchkiss pre-start and led out to the port end. Confusion then rained as Cox/Hotchkiss, unaware of the change in start sequence ended up buried in the pack.
By the first windward mark Cumley/Jones and David and Georgina Hand had broken clear of the fleet and went on to have a clear race. On the second lap the Hands sailed lower and faster down the run preventing Cumley/Jones gybing back to the leeward mark on port. This gave the Hands the lead for a lap before succumbing to the same move 1 lap later when Cumley and Jones regained the lead and just managed to hold off the Hands to the finish line.
Our thanks go to Northampton for putting on a thoroughly enjoyable and well organised series for the Larks. 17 Larks competed in at least one weekend of the series with 12 boats qualifying at the end.
1 Steve Cumley and Eluned Jones 5 points
2 Simon Cox and Anna Hotchkiss 7 points
3 David Hand and Georgina Hand 10 points
4 David Marlow and Nick Marlow 13 points
5 Ruth Johnson and James Stewart 15 points
