GJW Direct Belle Isle at Waldringfield - Report
The Lark class descended on the sleepy Suffolk village of Waldringfield over the weekend of 19/20th October for the latest round of the GJW Direct Belle Isle Series. This slumber was swiftly broken however as, in tense anticipation of this epic battle, the atmosphere reached fever pitch. As the sailors left the comfort of the Deben’s sandy shores no one could have predicted the excitement that was to follow on the chocolate brown waters of this mighty river.
They came expecting close racing and so it proved as Alan Krailing, crewed firstly by Annie Knott and on day 2 by wife Helen, won through with a steady run of top 2 results. The thundery clouds that circled overhead matched the mood of Chris Fish and Beth Condie, as the simmering heat of competition threatened to boil over after a disputed mark rounding in race 5. This was ultimately extinguished by an unfortunate capsize which put pay to their challenge and left them having to console themselves with an impressive win in the final race around Waldringfield’s very own ‘Belle Isle’ which proved enough to take 2nd overall.
Pete Gray and Rachael Rhodes were improving faster than the Deben’s coursing ebb as they rounded off day 2 with a 1st and 2nd. This proved enough to snatch 3rd overall from Harry Pynn and Gemma Cook on count back.
