The bumper fleet of 26 Larks that helped Waldringfield to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Easter Egg were rewarded with a near perfect combination of breeze and high tide (not to mention copious quantities of chocolate!). Admittedly the conditions were less than tropical but what more could we expect on a bank holiday weekend!
Six races produced 5 different winners in what was a highly competitive event, ultimately decided in final stages of a topsy-turvy final race.
After a general recall, Race 1 saw Stephen and Chris Videlo overhauling early leaders Chris Whitehouse and Maddie Harris, after finding the best of the breeze on a long first run against the tide. Alan Krailing reunited with Edd McArdle eventually made it through to second with Emma Harris and Millie Parsons, showing good pace in their new Ovington ship, coming through in 3rd.
The second race saw Ross Kearney/Jane Alexander impressively lead the fleet round the course, with Chris Whitehouse/Maddie Harris and Steve Hall/Jon Ibbotson chasing hard. Big shifts on the final lap saw the fleet compress significantly with these three taking the top places in a frantic finish.
The tide had turned for the final race of the day, and the fleet split on the first beat against the tide. Local wisdom appeared to fail as Charlie Roome/David Marlow and Ross & Jane tacked up the ‘wrong’ side of the river to take an early lead only to lose out when attempting to repeat the trick on the next lap. Alan & Edd stuck with the tried and trusted to take the win after a good battle with guest larkies Tom & Charlotte Stewart with Stephen & Chris Videlo in 3rd.
On Sunday Matt White crewed by daughter Emma, fresh from success at the Cadet inlands, rapidly worked their way into an unassailable position. Spunge Nunn and Annie Turner pushed hard for 2nd but could quite get past Alan & Edd.
Stephen & Chris Videlo claimed their 2nd win in the next race with Alan & Edd once again in 2nd, to take a 2 point lead over the race winners into the final race. New pairing Toby Wincer and Ally Dart gave a glimpse of their potential with a 3rd.
The event looked to be heading the way of Stephen & Chris Videlo as they rounded the windward mark well ahead of Alan & Edd languishing near the back of the fleet. However the long downwind legs and congested mark roundings made for a snakes and ladders type race which Chris & Maddie ultimately won ahead of Ross & Jane. A 3rd place for Stephen & Chris was not quite enough to overhaul Alan & Edd who came in 4th.
