Glorious sunshine and a lovely sandy beach met the Lark fleet as they arrived in Bridlington for their 2008 National Championships.
Saturday was spent boat bimbling and enjoying the sun before they all set sail for their practice race. Race Officer Bob (Arkie) Wainwright made the most of the fabulous conditions to give the fleet some gate start practice before holding a trapezium course race. Light wind specialists Julia and Stuart Allen lead from the start and were delighted to get their first nationals win.
The fleet again set sail on Sunday in beautiful sunny conditions. After the usual first race general recall, the fleet set off in 10knots of Easterly breeze. Jeremy Stephens and Ellie Bremner showed the fleet how it’s done with a magnificent port-end flier. The pair led from start to finish to secure their first bullet. Defending Champions Steve Cumley and Eluned Jones followed in second but were over-taken by Alan Krailing and Ed McArdle (2006 winners) only to get them back as the mist rolled in to reduce visibility to 5 boat lengths.
Meanwhile in the silver and bronze fleets, a lot of position changing took place as the fleet raced round the trapezium course. Dan Watson and Harrie Condie had a great day to finish 10th and first in the silver fleet. Bronze fleet winners were Jamie Mayhew and Tom Power with a 29th.
Two races were scheduled for Sunday but despite a tremendous effort from the race team, the shifty conditions meant only one race was sailed.
Tonight is the Crew’s Union and Board of Directors which guarantees a few sore heads on Monday morning.
