Lark Open meeting Saturday 29th March
21 boats took to the water for the Lark Open meeting. The number of travellers was impressive as the met office were forecasting gusts of 45 mph in the afternoon. OOD's Jim Hopton and Peter Scott held two back-to-back races before lunch and set a course without a gybe.
Emma Harris and Becky Priest, from Waldringfield, took the first race from Steve Hall and Simon Haighton, from Northampton. The wind came up for the second race and at times 25% of the competitors were blown over simultaneously, some on the beats and others in spectacular downwind death rolls. Hall and Haighton took the race from Matt Stearn and Adam Owens, also from Waldringfield.
The wind continued to rise and nine boats decided to sit out the last race. Three boats could have won the event at the start of the race, but Hall and Haighton took the strong field apart winning with a leg to spare to take the cup. Harris and Priest were second overall, despite retiring in the last race. Rich Bennett and Nicola Booth, from Staunton Harold, finished second in the race to take 3rd place overall. Unluckiest sailors were Steve Cumley and Eluned Jones who broke the mast while flying down wind with the kite up. The endurance prize went to John Crooks and Steven Graham in 10th place, the last of only six boats to finish all three races.
