Light and very variable winds on Sunday 20th May left the perfectly formed fleet of Larks at Banbury turning in circles wondering which way the puff of wind was actually coming from. The burgee seemed to be lying most times.
However, three races were sailed and these were very competitive with 8 boats still able to win going into the final race. Stuart and Julia Allen won their first ever open meeting race after a race long battle with Emma Harris and Becky Priest. During the race, every turning point seemed to lead back onto a beat, but the Allenís local knowledge and puff spotting ability saw them win through in the end.
The second race saw a different set of contenders for the first half, with Dave Young and Milly Parsons initially taking the lead, but eventually losing out to Steve Cumley and Eluned Jones who won from Chris and Anne Biglin and Harris/Priest.
Race three was sailed in the opposite direction as the breeze did actually settle into a constant (ish) direction, although still patchy. This time, Cumley/Jones and Harris/Priest broke away from the rest of the fleet to battle it out for the event. Harris/Priest, however, pulled away to a comfortable lead to the win, therefore taking the open. The Biglins, finishing in 3rd, finished a well deserved 3rd overall.
Many thanks to Banbury Sailing Club for hosting the event and for their exceptional hospitality. Thanks, also, to Chris Ellis for organising an excellent training session on Saturday, which was very well received by all.
