After the success of Saturday's Steve Nicholson Trophy (5 larks in the top 25) a few stayed on and braved another day at Northampton.
The day started much windier than Saturday and some boats decided to stay ashore. The wind eased during the first race - a pursuit - which obviously favoured the lark fleet. The larks took an early lead over the slower boats with Steve Hall and Simon Haighton leading at the first mark from Jon Lewis and Tessa Nicholls. Ruth Johnson got her summer helm, James Stewart, back for the weekend and they took the lead on the second beat which they then held to the end taking race honours. Jon and Tessa unfortunately had a spinnaker problem at the end of the first lap which dropped them back into the pack.
A few extra boats came out for the second, counting race. Several boats decided to try and get a head start, but only James and Ruth went back. The course had been changed and caught a few people out, allowing Stuart and Julia Allen through to the lead on the second, very tight reach. James and Ruth overhauled everyone on the next beat to take the lead, but were pushed hard all the way to the finish by Steve and Simon (who were one of the OCS boats). Jon and Tessa finished in 2nd, David and George Hand 3rd. John Crooks and Jane Alexander put in a great performance to finish 4th.
With Tom not competing yesterday, overall standings after 4 races have now altered slightly. Stuart and Julia are now leading having completed all 4 races with Tom and Ruth in
2nd. Full results are on the Northampton website.
