Bright sunshine and a decent breeze greeted the nine Larks for race 3 in the Northampton Winter Series.
The first race of the day was a pursuit format. Tom (speedy!) Jeffcoate and Ruth Johnson took the lead from the start and were never challenged. Stuart & Julia Allen slotted comfortably into second followed by Nick & Joanna Marlow and David & Georgina Hand.
The breeze picked up during the race giving some exciting close reaches and all the crews had to work hard with the spinnakers. Nick & Joanna tipped it in on a close reach letting Dave & Georgina through who then managed to catch Stuart & Julia up the beat giving a final result;
1st Tom & Ruth
2nd Dave & Georgina
3rd Stuart and Julia
The second race is the one that counts for the winter series. This was a handicap start for everyone. John Crooks was caught out having gone ashore in the first race expecting lunch to be served only to find out that the races were being sailed back to back!
At the start Tom & Ruth and Nick & Joanna went out the port end only to find it wasn’t as favoured as they had thought. However having weaved back through the fleet Tom & Ruth come out in front followed by Dave & Georgina, Nick & Joanna, Stuart & Julia and Rob & Ruth Marlow. Simon Cox was also in amongst the contenders until his crew was injured with the spinnaker pole putting them out of the race.
1st Tom Jeffcoate and Ruth Johnson
2nd David and Georgina Hand
3rd Nick and Joanna Marlow
4th Stuart and Julia Allen
5th Rob & Ruth Marlow
The next events at Northampton are the Steve Nicholson Trophy on Saturday 27th January 2007 (see Northampton website for details) followed by the race 4 in the winter series on Sunday 28th January so why not make a weekend of it.
