Waldringfield Cartoon Trophy Open Meeting Report
There were 15 entries for this year’s Cartoon Trophy. Numbers were down from last year as the event clashed with the West Lancs 24 hour race. Competitors arrived on Saturday to perfect conditions with bright sunshine and a force 4 wind.
The first race was set around the island with a flooding tide. The start was in front of the club house against the tide. Harry Pynn & Clare Gosling rounded the mark first closely followed by Alan Krailing & Edd McArdle, having started towards the island side of the line. By the end of the first lap Chris & Cathy Fish had caught up and taken the lead which they extended to the finish, whilst Matthew White & Harriet Steer made good ground through the fleet to close on the leading pack. Harry & Claire sailed hard aground on the final lap, dropping back to 4th place. Alan & Edd finished second, from Matt & Harriet.
The second race was held after lunch with the tide now going the other way. Alan Krailing & Edd McArdle led at the first mark followed closely by Harry Pynn & Claire Gosling then Stephen & Chris Videlo. Chris & Cathy Fish pulled up to third place on the second long beat down the river, but on the broad-reach back Stephen & Chris Videlo managed to claw back up to Alan & Edd to just lead around the leeward mark. For the rest of the race these two slowly pulled clear, with Alan & Edd having a slight edge upwind, and Stephen & Chris often regaining the lead downwind. At the end, Alan & Edd managed to hold the lead from Stephen & Chris, with Harry & Claire holding off Chris & Cathy to finish third. This meant that the leaders over night were Alan Krailing & Ed McArdle who were closely followed by Chris & Cathy Fish and Harry Pynn & Clare Gosling.
On Sunday morning there was very little wind so the racing was delayed to allow the wind to fill in to a steady force 2.
In the third race, Geoff Sinton & Sarah Olliff led at the first mark closely followed by Stephen & Chris Videlo, Steve Dunn & Kat Cook and Harry Pynn now crewed by Dave Chisholm. The strong tide left very few opportunities to overtake, and Geoff sailed a good defensive race keeping his lead right up to the penultimate beat where Stephen & Chris just managed to find their way past to take the lead through to the finish. Matthew & Harriet impressively pulled through to finish in third place with Alan & Edd in fourth.
It was all to play for in the last race as Alan Krailing, Stephen Videlo and Chris Fish could still win.
In the final race, Harry & Dave narrowly led at the first mark from Alan & Edd then Chris & Cathy, with Stephen & Chris a little further back in fourth place. Harry & Dave kept their cool to lead the race through to the finish in a closely fought race with Alan & Edd holding second place until the penultimate beat where Stephen & Chris just managed to overhaul them to finish second.
