A competitive fleet of Larks returned to Arun Sailing Club on 5/6 August.
With the Lark Nationals only a week away, the visitors were treated to the best possible pre-Nationals tune-up, with a warm Force 3-4 sea breeze giving Mediterranean conditions. With impeccable organisation, the club had also arranged for the fleet to sail out on the ebb and return on the flood, so making the trip out to sea easy.
In Race 1, Hufton/Whitehouse were leading up the last beat, only to be overtaken by Stewart & Johnson and Pynn & Parsons. However, while Pynn sailed Stewart to the left of the finish on Starboard, Hufton ducked both and tacked, pinning them both long enough to be able to tack for the line in first place, from Pynn and Stewart.
Hufton & Whitehouse also took Race 2, with second and 3rd places reversed from Race 1. In Race 3, there was to be more drama, with Hufton & Whitehouse reeling in Pynn & Parsons sufficiently to be ahead as they tacked for the finish ahead. However, Hufton failed to give enough room at the committee boat to the overlapped Pynn and their subsequent penalty turns let Cox & Suggitt into second and Stewart & Johnson into third.
On the Sunday, a SW gradient wind and just enough tide to kick up some interesting waves made for some cracking sailing. Jon Fish appeared with Toby Lewis - the new Enterprise World Champion crew - and won both races from Hufton & Whitehouse, the first by 10 seconds and the second by just 50cm! Stewart & Johnson and Cox & Suggitt finished third, respectively.
This was enough to give Hufton & Whitehouse the event for a second year running.
