Felixstowe Ferry Open Meeting Report
Wind waves and patchy sunshine welcomed 20 larks to Felixstowe Ferry for the latest event in the Gill Belle Isle traveller series.
Saturday saw near perfect conditions in a steadily building Force 3-4 with great waves making for some cracking down wind sailing. Race Officer Tim O’Leary decided to make the most of it and ran 3 races back to back.
Steve Dunn & Spanni Archer lead early on in race 1 but misjudged a very tight first reach. Harry Pynn & Millie Parsons took over at the front but eventually lost out in a tight tussle with Alan Krailing and Edd McArdle with Dougal Scott, ably crewed by Nick Marlow, standing in for Son David in third.
Race 2 saw a very close 3-way battle for 1st between Krailing & McArdle, Chris Fish & Beth Condie and Scott & Marlow. Krailing & McArdle managed to make the decisive break to lead home from Fish & Condie (OCS), Scott & Marlow and Steve Videlo promoted to third.
Fish & Condie got away well to lead from start to finish in Race 3 with Krailing & McArdle in 2nd, Pynn & Parsons and Simon Cox & Laura Jakeman sneaking past Scott & Marlow on the reach to the finish for third and fourth.
Sunday, arrived with gusts up to force 7 and a terrifying looking Deben Bar, sensibly racing was held up river and perhaps even more sensibly the majority of the fleet decided to keep their covers on. Those that did venture out kept the rescue boats busy with some spectacular capsizes.
Dunn & Archer first, Fish & Condie second (just) and Tom Jeffcoate & Jane Alexander third, demonstrated their windy weather skills by managing to keep their masts out of the Deben Mud. Further down the fleet Ben Stone & Jenny Suddell posted a hard fought eighth to clinch the Bronze Fleet. While Chris Whitehouse & Ruth Johnson relied on a very strong showing on the Saturday to take the Silver fleet.
