Weymouth SC greeted The Larks for the 12th round of the Gill, Belle Isle Series on 1/2 July. Despite the weather forecast of light winds a strong fleet assembled on the harbour wall. Two races were sailed on the Saturday in a breeze that steadily built. Dougal Scott & David Marlow picked up a second and a first to lead overnight, but with a mix of boats in close contention it was all left to play for.
Weymouth kindly laid on a widescreen TV and free Pimms for the England game, so by the time England bottled it on penalties we were all well into the party spirit. Some might say it was an excellent opportunity to get to know the Scorpion fleet a little bit better!
A short delay on Sunday morning for the wind to fill in gave us opportunity to clear our heads and apply the several layers of sun cream required for the day ahead. Dougal Scott & David Marlow port tacked the fleet and led up the first beat, but as the race continued the wind dropped and the fleet concertinaed. Steve Cumley & Eluned Jones correctly went left up the final beat and left down the run to sneak through and win the race. With no more races possible and a discard kicking in Cumley and Jones had done enough to sneak the open.
In the silver fleet Helen Scott & Bex Marriott managed to beat runaway fleet leaders Nick & Joanna Marlow by 1 place and in the bronze fleet Richard Adams & Katie Linnaker finished ahead of Katherine Sampson & Alison Dart.
Our thanks go to Weymouth SC for organising an excellent event and to Douglas Gill for generously donating the prizes.
