Sunshine, wind, waves (or was it chop), a funny bloke from Padstow and dolphins were the order for the weekend at Rock. The venue and social lived up to its reputation for the Bronze fleet, who all had a great weekend. The highlight for many was the visit by 15 dolphins at the end of race 1 up by the finish area. For those who missed out on the experience, try sailing around at the back next time, you miss a lot up there at the front.
Dan Watson & Helen Hunt put in 4 sterling performances in and around mid fleet to take the Bronze fleet top prize in the Gill sponsored Belle Isle event by 17 points.
Tony & Brenda Hotchkiss, Stuart & Julia Allen and Robert & Ruth Marlow battled it out for second and third place in the Bronze fleet. Each 'team' beat the others in two races, but it was Team Hotchkiss that took second by one point. Third position overall was decided by a tie break and was cruelly stolen from Robert & Ruth in the last race when the Allen’s came through on the second lap to finish ahead of the Marlow’s and Team Hotchkiss.
John Crooks (what a great Social Sec.) & Helen Winward showed some good speed in their new ship, but were unlucky with an outhaul problem in race three, which left them a few points off the pace.
Andy Cox (another great Social Sec.) & Vicky Wanstall had a fine weekend, improving their positions in each race, beating a good turn out from Portsmouth University boats and one or two gold fleet helms overall, showing that consistency and persistence is the name of the game.
Thanks to RS&WSC for hosting the event and to the Social Sec’s for laying on a great evenings entertainment.
